A new ranking of the nation's most dangerous roadways says that 11 of these streets are in Texas.
To make their list, researchers analyzed four years, 2015-2019, worth of car accident information related to alcohol, weather, and fatalities, among other things.
One of the most common factors in fatal crashes on America's worst 100 roads is the lack of light, researchers say. On Texas' I-35 (the 6th most dangerous road in the U.S.) conditions were dark in nearly 70% of all fatal crashes.
Recovering from a bad accident can be a long, difficult, and expensive process for crash victims. When this happens, it is important for injured people to understand their rights to get maximum compensation for their losses and pain. John R. Solis Attorney At Law is proud to represent accident victims in the Laredo, Texas, and larger Webb County area. If you've been injured, contact our firm for a free case evaluation.
US-83 In Webb County
In Texas, the most dangerous roadways include the portion of US-83 that runs through Webb County.
Of all of the Webb County crash-related fatalities surveyed, about 25% of them happened on US-83. The portion of US-83 in Laredo, also known as Purple Heart Trail and Sacred Heart Drive, has experienced more than 5 fatal car accidents over the last several years.
Most of US-83 is two lanes, and poor judgment in lane changes is a key factor in crashes. About one-third of fatal US-83 accidents happened in the dark, according to the study. More than 15% of the crashes involved alcohol. People exiting ranches are also involved in many accidents, as are fatigued drivers trying to pass others.
There does not seem to be a plan in place, at the moment, for specific highway safety upgrades to US-83 in Laredo or Webb County. However, the city of Laredo is moving ahead with its Vision Zero plans (launched in 2019) to make roadways safer for all users, not just motorists. In addition to US-83, some of the city's other crash hotspots are I-35, Loop 20 (Bob Bullock Loop), and US-59 by Lake Casa Blanca.
